Start Your Running Season on the Right Foot (and in the right shoe!)

Believe it or not, spring is just around the corner and we are only a few weeks away from the start of the Kintec running groups. Many of us take a break from running through the winter and focus on other activities, it then takes us a few weeks to really get into the swing of things with our running. Starting out too quickly increases the risk of injury and can really put a damper on one of the best times of the year to run. This also applies to our running gear.

There is a very good chance that the running shoes that you finished the season with last year are no longer appropriate for running in this year. Unfortunately shoes don’t just break down when you are using them, they also break down simply by sitting in your closet. The midsole EVA (the foam used in the midsole) hardens and shrinks over time which means you are losing cushioning and support from your shoes even while they are not in use.

Now, that does not mean that a fairly new pair of shoes that sit there for a couple months are not good anymore. It likely means though, that the pair of shoes that was closer to the end of its functional life last fall is in need of replacement. One of the best ways to get a sense of how broken down your current shoes are is to try them on back to back with a new pair of shoes. Give yourself a week or two before the start of your running season to be fit with new runnings shoes as this gives you some time to wear them around the house before you start running in them.
